Awaken the screencaster within presented by Peter Cooper (@peterc) at HybridConf 2013. Peter discussed screencasts and provided an insight into how to produce high quality screencasts. Here's what I learned from his talk.

  • A screencast is showing a screen with narration, but is much better with:
    • A view of the speaker
    • Intros and titles
    • Live interviews
  • There are many types of screencasts that we may not consider:
    • Animated gifs
    • Live public coding
    • Interactive classes
    • Game playing
  • Screencasts can be used to:
    • Sell
    • Teach
    • Demonstrate work
    • Make money
    • Aid inter team communication
    • Increase your profile
    • To create personal records
  • The benefits of screencasts include:
    • Increased engagement
    • Boring things become more interesting
    • Highly visual contexts
  • Examples of great screencasts can be found at:
  • You can create screencasts for:
    • Your own work
    • Explaining someone else's work
    • Installation guides
    • Walking through projects for clients
    • Collaboration
  • To make a great screencast you should:
    • Write a script
    • Create some slides, at least at the start and end, make parts more interesting.
    • Use a self-standing microphone.
    • Use a large clear font size, must be readable when the video is at YouTube's default size.
    • Use an external camera, remember to keep your environment clean when recording.
    • Understand codecs
    • Keep file sizes small.
