Hybrid Conf: Nodecopter

Hybrid Conf: Nodecopter

Nodecopter presented by Andrew Nesbit (@teabass) at HybridConf 2013. Andrew discussed Nodecopter, a flying robot controlled through the Node programming language. Here's what I learned from his talk.

Martyn Kelly was unable to attend HybridConf so Andrew Nesbit stepped in at the last minute to talk about Nodecopter.

  • Andrew uses the AR Drone 2.0 which costs about £300.
    • This is an off the shelf kids toy which you don't need to modify.
  • The drone comes with a lot of tech:
    • HD camera
    • Linux
    • 1GHz CPU
    • Magnetometer
    • Ultrasound
    • Down facing camera
    • Accelerometer
    • Wifi
    • Gyroscope
  • You can SSH into the drone and install Node on it, simply install ar-drone and you can get started.
  • You can extend the drone to do other cool things such as:
    • Facial recognition
    • Use 3G/GSM
    • Mapping
    • Interact with other drones
  • If you can't afford a drone you can use voxel-drone, an HTML 5 minecraft clone containing a virtual drone which behaves in the same way as a real drone.
  • A GPS module just came out.
